Granada has a very impressive cathedral. Construction was begun in the year 1523, but it was not completed until 181 years later, in 1704. It was built on the site of a former mosque, as were a number of other churches in the city. Most of the cathedral was built in the renaissance style.

The façade of the "Madraza" building. This was formerly a school for the study of the Coran, founded in 1349 by Yusuf I, almost 150 years before the Christians conquered the city. The façade in the photo wasn't built till the 18th century. The architects did not, however, destroy all the Moorish buildings

inside. The "mirhab", for example (details of its highly elaborate interior wall can seen at left), was preserved, and can still be seen today.

Farther to the left, you can see one of the rather grotesque figures that decorate the fountain in the nearby "Bib-rambla" square.

A few minutes by foot from the cathedral is the "Cuesta de Gomerez", the street that leads the tourist up to the entrance to the "Alhambra", the moorish castle famed for its exotic beauty. (Click here to go to the Alhambra page.)
